Capabilites, cooperation, and challenges in Cyberspace.
Siw Tynes Johnsen, analyst and security advisor with the Norwegian Defense Estates Agency (Forsvarsbygg)
Cyber operations are military operations conducted in or through the cyber domain.
Cyber defense is part of NATO´s core task of collective defense. NATO is responsible for the protection of its own communication networks an allies are committed to enhancing information sharing in preventing cyber attacks.
Cyber operations are most effectively conducted in combinations with other means of force, exploiting the cyber domain in combination with other warfighting domains. Cyber war is science fiction, cyber in war is reality.
Most actors are non-state, however the most able and therefor most dangerous are large nation states.
The use of social media is an instant connection to the operational theatre, NATO needs to consider its national audience. There are challenges between NATO allies, regarding trust and communication, also towards the EU and national sovereignty.
