Henrik Stålhane Hiim

Henrik Stålhane Hiim is an associate professor at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies at the Norwegian Defence University College. His main research interest is nuclear strategy and nonproliferation, as well as Chinese foreign and security policy. His recently published book, Strategic Assistance: China and International Nuclear Weapons Proliferation (Routledge 2018) explores the evolution of China’s approach to the nuclear programs of Pakistan, Iran, and North Korea. His work has appeared in outlets such as International Security, Asian Security, Journal of Contemporary China, Survival, and War on the Rocks. 

Hiim has previously been a senior researcher and Asia program coordinator and at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs. He was a Stanton Nuclear Security Fellow at the Security Studies Program, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2014-2015), and has also been a guest researcher at Beijing University.

Hiim holds a PhD and a master’s degree in political science from Oslo University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Oslo University College, and has studied Chinese and international relations at Renmin University in Beijing.
